2004 Leadership Awards

GOLD Star – for outstanding leadership and work on behalf of many important bills or issues during the 2004 Legislative session.

Senator Tony Hill – For fighting for the rights of citizens to change the constitution; for defending government regulatory employees against the threat of misdemeanor charges for upholding the state’s pollution rules and regulations. He also deserves recognition for his succinct arguments during days of floor debates regarding constitutional amendments.

Senator Debbie Wasserman-Schultz – For sponsoring amendment language that would have protected Florida’s manatees, and for fighting for Florida’s manatees; for sponsoring the Arsenic in Playground legislation; for working to improve the growth management bills and for environmental leadership.

Representative Arthenia Joyner – For sponsoring the lead poisoning bill and for protecting children from arsenic-treated wood used in playgrounds, and for being a consistent voice for citizens’ rights in debates in committees and on the House floor.

Silver Star - For outstanding leadership and work on behalf of several important bills or issues during the 2004 Legislative Session.

Senator Anna Cowin – For sponsoring legislation making changes to the anti-manatee bill; for assisting citizens in the fight to protect their rights to amend Florida’s constitution.

Representative Susan Bucher – For leading the way during floor fights to maintain citizens’ rights to amend Florida’s constitution; for assuming the lead as the pro-environmental voice in the House when special interest lobbyists sought to quietly steer anti-environmental legislation through legislative committees.

Senator Frederica Wilson – For sponsoring the Florida Clean Elections Act to bring democracy back to our election process.

Laurels – For leadership on specific bills or issues during the 2004 Legislative Session.

Senator Al Lawson – For sponsoring the Northwest Florida Water Management District bill that would have increased funding for the District in order to provide wetlands protection and stormwater runoff facilities for flood protection.

Representative Anne Gannon – For sponsoring amendments to prevent damaging changes to the campaign finance laws; for being a voice for protecting the rights of citizens to amend the state constitution; for supporting the effort to protect children from arsenic-treated wood used in playgrounds.

Representative Curtis Richardson – For sponsoring the Northwest Florida Water Management District bill that would have increased funding for the District in order to provide wetlands protection and stormwater runoff facilities for flood protection.
