76 Environmental Activists Evaluate 2002 Legislative Session at Largest Summit Ever

The Post-Legislative Environmental Summit was held June 2, 2002, at Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida. The event was co-sponsored by the Florida League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club, Florida Chapter; The Florida Clean Elections Campaign, and the Florida Climate Alliance.

The Summit included a record number of activists (76) and environmental organizations; the new groups participating multiplied again this year, directly resulting from the recent Veto Campaign against the Anti-Citizen Legislation (HB 813) signed by Governor JEB Bush on May 15.

Participants evaluated which activities worked well during this legislative session (e.g., grass roots lobbying back in the home districts of the legislators) and what would have strengthened the environmental cause during this session (complete unity among environmentalists, without "Lone Ranger" renegade lobbyists; "there should be no compromise on issues of principle" as opposed to the seven groups which supported the Governor's signing of the controversial Everglades Bill against the veto call of more than 100 organizations from around the state).
